Blackest Night: Red Lantern Atrocitus Action Figure Review

Atrocitus is a bad-ass character. So as such, so should his figure. In defense, it is a cool looking toy but really isn't pose-able. He looks like he's stuck in a perpetual "arm flexing" pose and nothing else. The uniquely shaped lantern is a nice touch and overall his suit is pretty slick. Do recommend for collectors, but not so much if you actually intend on opening him up and posing.

Customer Buzz !

lacking - Jarrett Burdette - South Carolina
Atrocitus is the figure I wanted most from the blackest night storyline and we get ..........this

DC Direct is famous for not having a ton of articulation but I hope your ok with only slight arm movement the sculpt in my opinion is poor the face looks like they forgot the character has a neck the roaring face is poor

the paint is decent but there are tiny flakes were the figure has some red and black mixing then you get to the ring if I knew nothing about the character I would think he had a small bit of quality control issue on the hand its a tiny lump with a ever so slightly different shade of red to it its more of a zit than a ring

his only accesorie other than base is his lantern which your just supposed to let hang from his hand it will but very poorly how hard would it have been to give us an alternate hand or even headsculpt? not very

overall its poor on almost any scale it looks decent when posed with the rest of the figures but thats not saying much

Atrocitus - Blood Sport - D Strick - Birmingham, AL
Atrocitus is an evil alien from space sector 666 (yeah, bad juju). He has a serious mad on for the Green Lantern Corps and using his rage and blood magic he forms the Red Lantern Corps made up of the most rage filled beings he can find.

For kids:
Comic book collecting has become something of a more adult hobby therefore I doubt many kids even know who this guy is. If, by chance you do have a young kid reading current Green Lantern books then they might but then you might want to take a look at what your kid is reading too and be sure it is age appropriate. He is a rather ugly bad guy so that might make him cool. But another downside for kids is this is a more collector oriented line so he's not well articulated. I think kids overall won't be too interested in this.

For adults:
He's an ugly dude, no doubt about it. The sculptors went out of their way to put in a lot of grisly detail in his face and hands. He has beady eyes, a roaring mouth with spiked teeth and skin that makes Freddy Kreuger look smooth. His right hand is a fist and his left an open claw. His armor consists of his big shoulder pads and high collar, chest and back plate, wrist gauntlets and boots. If I had to point out some flaws I'd say that each hand is in an awkward pose and he seems a bit thin in the torso to me.

Paint is very clean throughout. His skin is a dark red with black wash to highlight the detail. He's got beady yellow eyes and sickly yellowish white teeth. His suit is primarily dark black and his armor is metallic red. There is a tiny bit of slop on the thin red piping on his waist. The red lantern rage symbol is stark white on black and stands out well. The only thing that bugs me is that his red shoulder pads and collar are a separate piece and don't match the red of the rest of his outfit being much darker and non-metallic. This may be somewhat accurate but the difference is large and somewhat jarring.

Unfortunately articulation is the pits. Now this is a DC Direct figure and they do more "collectibles" than "toys" but really, other companies do this in this price range with plenty of articulation (see NECA Dead Space Action Figure Isaac (Bloodied)). Oh well. The head turns side to side and tilts a bit but his big honking collar restricts anything else (Note: I found out you can pop the collar off - but beware, I don't think it was "intended" to come off). He has ball shoulders and single pin elbows, no other cuts on his arms, but his wrists do turn - due to the odd angle you have to work for it though. No waist articulation. Hips move forward only and he has single pin knees. That's 11 points - not great.

I'm not big on stands but he does come with a cool looking red lantern symbol stand. And he has a red lantern to carry around. Both of these look really cool thanks to great designs by the original comic artist.

So overall it's a great sculpt and paint but the playability (for kids) or pose-ability (for adults) is impaired by the lack of articulation. Using the stand does give you a little more versatility but I like my figures to stand on their own. It actually hurts the sculpt a little that it's hard to get him into a good looking pose other than just standing there looking mean. I feel 3 ½ but I'm rounding down today.
